How PROpickleball integrated pickleball into the premium Russo racket-sports event

Russo wanted to extend its working tennis lifestyle model to new racket sports. PROpickleball designed the pilot mechanics, helped recruit and balance participants, ran two padel sessions and integrated pickleball as a separate way to discover the game. After the event, the club proposed repeating the model and began discussing winter pickleball inside the complex.

Use case

Not just run a tournament, but create a new club product

Preparation

Economics and recruitment first, then the bracket

Product

Two playing sessions

For the event, we formed two sessions at different levels with about eight players each so participants could play with almost no waiting.

Qualification

Skill level was checked manually

Promotion

Paid traffic alone was not enough

The funnel was tested through owned channels, the website and paid promotion, but manual recruitment through the club and personal network remained decisive. Another barrier was the perceived level of the future participant group.

What happened at the venue

Result

Padel and pickleball strengthened a single club product

Russo proposed repeating the format during the outdoor season. The discussion covered three consecutive slots, a more regular calendar and mandatory inclusion of pickleball in the next announcement.

What we take to other clubs

Four working principles

The lineup is part of the product

For a premium amateur event, opening registration is not enough. Players assess the expected level of opponents, so the field needs to be actively recruited and balanced.

Less waiting — better experience

A large combined tournament on two padel courts creates queues. Sessions of eight players gave participants much denser playing time.

Pickleball works as an entry point

Guests do not need prior playing experience. A short briefing and a few rallies during the event make it easier to try the new sport.

Lifestyle matters just as much as the playing setup

For the Russo audience, the event needed to be a place where spending several hours felt enjoyable, combining sport, social interaction, partners, food and content.

After the pilot

From a one-off event to a system

  • Repeat the club format with stable recruitment and clear participant qualification.
  • Include pickleball in the announcement in advance instead of making it a surprise at the venue.
  • Automate registration and game history instead of messaging every participant manually.
  • Develop a winter setup with temporary flooring in the basketball hall.

For PROpickleball, this case matters because it moves from a one-off event to product work with a club: audience, sporting mechanics, registration, repeatability and infrastructure are treated as one system.
