Formats
The format determines the number of matches, waiting and the final stage
| Format | It's going | Strength | What to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| round-trip | Everyone plays with each other within the group | Plenty of guaranteed play and a transparent table | The number of matches is growing rapidly with the size of the group |
| Groups and playoffs | Qualification in groups, then the final grid | Guaranteed matches plus a clear final stage | Advancement, seeding and tiebreak rules are required |
| Olympic or double grid | Advancing the net after victory or defeat | Managed duration and clear path to medals | A simple bracket gives some participants a short amount of play |
| Mexican, Americano, King of the Court | Short rounds with changing opponents or partners | High pace and many playing combinations | The scoring system and rotation rules need a separate explanation |

How to calculate the number of matches
In a full circle group of n pairs n × (n − 1) / 2. For example, six pairs create 15 matches before the final stage.
Then account for the number of courts, slot duration, transitions, warm-up, result entry and contingency. The formula shows in advance whether the chosen system fits the booked time and how much actual play each participant gets.
Category and level
Clear eligibility rules matter more than the category name
Men’s, women’s, mixed, open and team categories determine the composition.
A rating or transparent scale determines competitive comparability within a category.
Seeding rules affect the bracket and group balance, so they are published before the start.
The organizer describes the low-entry scenario in advance: merging, rescheduling or refund.
Scoring, rules and regulations
The rules of play define the serve, rally, faults and basic scoring. Tournament regulations define categories, match format, seeding, time limits, court-call procedure, officiating and result recording.
Before the start, a participant should understand the scoring system, target score, win-by margin, time-outs and format of the deciding match.
For a specific competition, follow the organizer’s published regulations. Use the primary sources below to verify basic rules and official requirements.

First tournament
Prepare four things in advance
Serve and return
A consistent start to the rally matters more than speed. An error on the first shots quickly gives away the initiative.
Account
Practice calling the score and serving order before the tournament — it reduces unnecessary load during the match.
Partnership
Agree in advance on middle balls, returns, lobs and shared principles of pair movement.
Match-day routine
Plan for registration, warm-up, waiting between matches, water, food and possible delays.
How an organizer builds the schedule
First, available courts and hours are fixed. Then the matches in each category, slot length and number of parallel games are calculated. Transitions, registration, warm-up, finals and contingency are added afterward.
A large tournament is easier to divide into waves and categories with separate windows. This reduces the number of players waiting at the same time and simplifies the work of officials, administrators and the results desk.

Frequent questions
What to clarify before registering
How do I choose my first tournament?
Check the category level, number of guaranteed matches, scoring format, duration and clarity of the regulations. A group stage usually gives a beginner more match experience.
Can I register on my own?
Yes, if the format allows individual registration and changing partners, or if the organizer helps find a partner. In a classic doubles category, both players are confirmed before the deadline.
How should I compare the cost of different tournaments?
Compare the entry fee with guaranteed playing volume, category duration, venue, organization and additional services.
What scoring systems are used?
The organizer specifies the system in the regulations: side-out scoring, rally scoring, play to a set number of points, or a time-limited match. Participants should see the format before the category starts.
How do I choose a category by level?
Use a current rating, previous tournament results and a coach’s assessment. The organizer should describe eligibility and category-merging rules in advance.
