International Tour Comes to Shenzhen for the First Time

The Shenzhen Open will take place in the sports center of Baoan District, and the city government calls the event the first international professional PPA tournament in Shenzhen and one of the highest-level stages of the Asian tour. On the PPA calendar, the competition follows Ho Chi Minh City and takes place before the September stage in Kuala Lumpur

For Shenzhen, it’s not just importing a ready-made sports brand; the city gains uniform international standards of conduct, access to professional players and a place on the regional calendar. PPA Tour Asia, in turn, is included in one of China’s largest consumer and manufacturing centers, where audiences, technology companies and sports supply chains are nearby

Organizers connect public and commercial infrastructure

According to Shenzhen, the organization includes the China State Administration of Sports’ tennis center, the China Tennis Association, city and district governments, a professional sports center and a commercial operator, which distributes roles: sports structures are responsible for status and standards, the city for the venue and the public program, the operator for the production of the event

For a new sport, this reduces the risk of a gap between the official calendar and the commercial market: an international brand does not exist separately from the national system, and urban activity is not just a mass festival without a competitive top: the player sees the associated route, and the partner understands who is responsible for the regulations, audience, venue and commercial rights

Professional and amateur circuits work simultaneously

Shenzhen Open includes professional and amateur categories, the professional part creates international bar and rating value, and open registration of amateurs expands the participation of residents pickleball, sports dating and social activities that help explain the game to a person without competitive experience.

This link is important for growth: professional matches alone do not guarantee mass demand, and mass classes without a strong athletic pattern quickly turn into local leisure. The joint program allows the viewer to see the best level, try the game, register in an accessible category and then return to the club or section after the tournament

Baoan uses tournament as a tool of consumption

The city explicitly claims the Shenzhen Open’s connection to the shopping, tourism and restaurant resources of Baoan, Qianhai and the central district, a model of the event economy: the visitor must not only spend time on the stands, but also use the city’s infrastructure before and after matches. For the district, the tournament becomes a way to load facilities and create a new reason for traveling

pickleball So the festival program can quickly convert audience traffic into participation, and then into inventory purchases, court rentals, training and re-events.

China is already building a national competitive layer

The international stage builds on existing internal development: in 2025, the Chinese National Championship in Hebi brought together 25 regional teams and 311 athletes, access was built through territorial representation, and the program included singles, doubles and team disciplines, which shows the transition from disparate registrations to a system where regions form teams and are responsible for training

Hebi is also developing urban infrastructure, and by the end of 2025, the city had more than 1,500 venues, with a network covering parks, schools, communities and commercial centers, according to the State Sports Administration of China, figures that are specific to a Chinese city and should not be mechanically transferred to Russia, but they show the scale of state and municipal mobilization around the new sport

Professional tour opens the industrial circuit

The South of China is an important manufacturing region for sports goods, materials and equipment. The International Tournament creates a place where a manufacturer can see the requirements of professional sports, test a product, work with players and seek out foreign partners. For PPA, proximity to suppliers also makes it easier to develop equipment, branded zones and regional contracts

The market is not limited to rackets and balls. There is a demand for coverage, nets, lights, registration software, ratings, broadcasts, referee training, club management and sports tourism. A city event is useful when it gathers these services around a real calendar, rather than existing as a stand-alone exhibition without players and buyers

What Russian projects need to take from the model

The key message is to link levels of development: a club tournament should lead to a city series, a city series to a regional selection, the strongest players to a national calendar, and a major event to partners and infrastructure solutions. When each level exists separately, the player does not understand the trajectory, and the investor does not see the market except for the lease of the court

The Russian side needs a specific product to work with China: a manufacturer can offer a batch of rackets or balls, local content, player feedback and a demonstration at a tournament; a city can pilot on a public playground with a measurement of attendance; a club can train a team; a general presentation on popularity pickleball without a testable result is insufficient.

Why it is important for development pickleball Russia

  • Shenzhen shows how the international tournament is built into the work of sports authorities, the city, the district and the commercial operator
  • A bundle of professional matches, amateur categories and open classes creates a path from the spectator to the regular player
  • The Chinese market is important for Russian clubs and investors as a source of equipment, technology and potential partnerships, but requires local testing and transparent conditions

Conclusions for PROpickleball, clubs and investors

  • It is useful for federations to link club, regional and national competitions with common admission criteria and a calendar
  • Cities should evaluate the tournament through infrastructure load, residents’ participation, tourist flow and subsequent classes, not just the number of spectators on the day of the event
  • PROpickleball It can act as a Russian test platform for Chinese manufacturers and operator of pilot events for developers and municipal facilities.
