Why pickleball suits older adults

A pickleball court is 13.4 by 6.1 meters, a little more than half the size of a tennis court. The distance between players at the net rarely exceeds 2–3 steps, and a 2.1-meter zone on each side of the net prohibits volleys; near the net, the opponent must wait for the ball to bounce before playing it in that zone. This rule removes some close-range volley situations.

> Pickleball limits the workload through the size of the court and the rules of play, not through a coach's advice — the playing space, not the opponent, sets the pace.

What physical load to expect on court

In one hour of doubles at a relaxed pace, you cover about 1.5–2.5 km, mainly through lateral steps near the baseline and short bursts toward the net. Pickleball strokes are performed mostly from low to high without a sharp overhead swing; this is a technical characteristic, not a guarantee that the load on your ligaments will be safe.

Adaptive formats and rules for beginners 50+

Adaptive pickleball is the same game under the official rules, but with a different group composition and session pace: partners are matched by age and level, and training is built around technique rather than competition. Court and ball rules do not change; the session structure does.

In beginner groups 50+, the power serve with a run-up is usually removed in favor of a shorter underhand serve—it is legal and does not require a sharp arm movement. Rallies are deliberately slowed early in training: the coach asks players to keep the ball in play longer rather than trying to win the point on the first shot. This reduces abrupt movements during a session and gives time to reinforce technique.

> The adaptive format changes the pace of the session and the mix of partners, but not the game itself—the court, ball and rules remain the same as in regular pickleball.

Lesson formats: comparison by physical load and price

The format determines both price and physical load. A private session gives maximum control over pace, while a group session adds the social side of the game on the same court with the same ball.

Court rental and the ball for individual and group sessions are paid separately from the training fee—confirm this with the coach before booking.

How to start: step-by-step first lessons

A paddle is usually provided for the first lessons — you do not need to buy equipment before your first lesson.

Paddle, shoes and protection for an older player

For an older player, the paddle and shoes affect comfort more than they do for a younger beginner: a light paddle reduces load on the wrist and shoulder, while shoes with a non-slip outsole reduce the risk of rolling an ankle during a sudden change of direction.

Pickleball paddle weight ranges from 190 to 250 grams. Light models, up to 220 grams, require less effort on each shot and are usually more comfortable during long play. Core material — polymer or foam — determines the softness of impact; a softer core dampens vibration that can load the elbow and wrist during repeated shots. The paddle selection guide explains these parameters in more detail.

Where to play: groups, coaches and venues

You can play at the same venues as players of other ages. Pickleball does not generally require separate courts only for older adults, but groups and session times can be selected separately by age and level.

If you need the format only once — for example, to meet with friends — you can book a court separately without joining a training group.

Common beginner mistakes and concerns

  • **Buying a heavy paddle “to grow into.”** A paddle weighing 260 grams or more puts more load on the wrist with every shot—for the first months, a light model or a rental paddle is a better choice.
  • **Skipping the warm-up before play.** Going straight onto the court without 10–15 minutes of warm-up increases the risk of strains—especially in the first weeks, before technique becomes automatic.
  • **Fear of coming without a partner.** An individual lesson or mini-group does not require your own pair — the coach matches a partner by level on site.
  • **Comparing your pace with younger players at open play.** Not every open play is suitable for a start—it is better to begin in a group whose lineup and pace are selected for the age range in advance.
  • **Playing without non-slip court shoes.** Running shoes with aggressive tread can catch on the court during sharp direction changes—this causes falls more often than the game itself.

Frequent questions

At what age can you start playing pickleball?

Does a pair need special physical preparation before the first lesson?

No. The first lesson focuses on basic technique and short rallies — no special preparation is required.

Can you play if you have knee or back problems?

The court is smaller and volleys next to the net are restricted by the rules, so movements are shorter. We do not rank sports by joint load: with chronic problems, an appropriate activity level should be determined by a medical professional rather than a coach or an article.

How many times a week should you train at the start?

One or two 60-minute sessions per week are enough to reinforce technique without overloading the body in the first month.

Do you need your own paddle for the first lesson?

No. Paddles are usually provided for private and group sessions; it is better to buy one after deciding on grip size and weight.
