The main guide for the selection of racket
Racket for pickleball: How to choose a model for yourself
Racket for pickleball The choice must not be appropriate to the player's abstract level, but rather to his grip, hand speed, technique and game tasks, and the choice begins with a test, not with a price, rating or advertising.
Define the task and limitations
Compare 2-3 models in the same exercise
Choose for stability, not one strong punch
Check a specific model in the current admission list
Start not with a brand, but with a task
A beginner is usually concerned with predictable contact, a comfortable handle and no extra load. A quick-arms player may be more concerned with maneuverability in the kitchen, a strong swing with depth control, and a two-handed athlete with a sufficient length of the handle. First, state what the new racket should improve and what is currently hindering the game
Weight and balance should be assessed together
The same weight on the scale does not mean the same feeling. A rocket with a higher weight in the head resists acceleration more strongly and can be more stable on the block, but slower to return to the finished position. A lighter head speeds up the work with the hands, but sometimes requires more of its own effort for depth
The shape changes the work area and speed of the hands
The standard wide form usually gives you a larger, more comfortable contact area and works quickly at the net. The longer one adds reach and leverage, but it can be less maneuverable. The hybrid shape is in between. The choice is not checked by a beautiful punch from the depth, but by the percentage of pure contacts in the block, volley, reception and ball on the outstretched arm
The thickness of the core is only one factor
Models around 14 mm often feel more straight and faster, and about 16 mm are softer and more controllable. But the final behavior also depends on the shape, materials, mass distribution, surface and edge design. You can't pick a racket just by the number of millimeters: compare similar models in the same game situations
The handle should fit the grip and technique
Check the circumference, the length, the shape of the faces and the quality of the fixation. Too big a handle makes it difficult to change the grip, too small makes it harder to squeeze the racket and can turn. For a two-handed backhand, you need enough length. Overgrip increases the circumference and changes the balance slightly, so finally test the racket in the configuration in which you will play
Surface affects rotation, but does not replace technique
Texture helps to interact with the ball, but rotation also depends on speed, angle and point of contact. Rough new surface wears out over time. Don't choose a model only by advertising metric spin: check if you keep the height and direction of the ball. Homemade surface change can make the racket inadmissible for competition
Check the security, security and availability
For an official or rating event, additionally check the specific model in the current list of approved equipment and regulations. Before paying, specify the exact modification, condition, warranty, returnability and availability: the same line name does not guarantee the same design of different versions
Test your rackets using one protocol
Take two or three models and do the same sequence: deep pitching, tricks, soft kicks by the kitchen, blocks against a quick ball, volleys, and a few game draws. Then repeat the part of the test towards the end of the class. A racket that is only good in the first five minutes, but overloads the hand or reduces accuracy under fatigue, does not solve the problem
- 10 pitches: depth and scatter, not top speed
- 10 tricks: length stability and direction
- Dink and reset series: ball height and pace control
- Fast blocks and volleys: the speed of return to the finished position
- Playing draws: solutions under pressure and comfort after load
Write down the result, not the impression
After each model, rate five criteria: clean contact, short ball control, block stability, arm speed and post-load comfort. Separately, note obvious problems — pain, pen twisting, frequent rim touching or loss of depth. Decide on a repeatable result, not on the design, discount or recommendation of a player with other techniques
What's wise to choose a beginner
For the first purchase, a general-purpose model with a handy handle and predictable control is usually more useful than an extreme power or highly specialized design, and before buying it, it is better to conduct at least one club racket lesson, understand the basic technique and then test several options, so the choice is based on your own feelings, rather than a list of characteristics without context

Frequent questions
What a racket for pickleball better a beginner?
One that gives you predictable contact, a comfortable grip, and doesn't overload your hand, and you'd better choose a particular model after comparing a few options on the court
Which is better: a 14 or 16 mm racket
There's no universal answer. Thickness affects the sense of contact, but the result depends on the whole design. Compare the models of similar shape and mass on the same test
Do I need to buy an expensive racket right away
No. Price doesn't guarantee a proper balance, pen or control, but it's better to identify the requirements and test multiple models first
Can I play any racket in the tournament
For a specific event, check the rules and the current list of approved models. A regular club game may not have the same requirements
