Where to serve

The serve goes diagonally, must fully clear the kitchen and land in the correct service court.

All serve requirements

Two mandatory rebounds

First the receiver must let the ball bounce, then the serving side must do the same. Only after that may either side freely choose a volley or a shot after the bounce.

Exact two-bounce rule

What is allowed and not allowed in the kitchen

Allowed
Enter the kitchen

Simply being in the zone is not a fault. After the ball bounces, you may play it from inside the kitchen.

Not allowed
Volley while touching the kitchen or its line

If the ball has not bounced, the player must be completely outside the non-volley zone.

Not allowed
Enter the kitchen because of momentum after a volley

A fault can occur after contact with the ball while the momentum from the shot is still continuing.

Why the score starts at 0–0–2

Start of the game0–0–2The team serving first has only one server in the opening service sequence.
Won the rally1–0–2Score a point, switch sides and continue serving.
Lost the rallyService changeAt the very start of the game, there is no second server within the first serving team.
After the first service change:first server loses the rally → the partner serves; second server loses the rally → service passes to the opponents.
Positions and serving order

Lines, net, and the around-the-post shot

The ball touched the line

That ball is in. The exception is the kitchen line on a serve: touching it is a fault.

The serve touched the net

There is no replay just because the serve touched the net. If the ball then lands legally in the correct service court, play continues.

Around-the-post shot

The ball may be returned around the outside of the net post. It does not have to travel over the net itself.

The diagrams are explanatory and not drawn to scale. If there is a dispute, rely on the full text of the relevant rule.

Account

Two scoring systems — do not confuse them

If you want a short explanation without official rule numbering, read a simple explanation of pickleball scoring.

Traditional scoring

Only the serving side can score a point. If it loses the rally, no point is awarded. In singles, the serve passes to the opponent. In doubles, after the first server loses a rally, the partner normally serves; after the second server loses, the serve passes to the opponents.

At the start of a doubles game, the first serving team has only one server, so the opening score is called as 0–0–2.

Example: 0–0–2 → the serving team wins the rally → 1–0–2. If it then loses the rally, the serve passes to the opponents; their next score call starts with their own score first.

Full traditional-scoring rules

Rally scoring

The winner of every rally scores a point, regardless of who served. In doubles, a team has one server during its service turn: losing a rally while serving immediately gives the serve to the opponents.

This format applies only when it has been selected for the competition in advance. All other standard rules remain in force unless the rally-scoring section explicitly changes them.

Example: at 0–0, the serving team loses the rally → the receiving team gets a point and the serve; from its perspective the score becomes 1–0.

part I. Introduction pickleball

A complete sequential presentation the basic game model, referee terminology, courtyard dimensions, and requirements for the net, ball, and paddle under the USA Pickleball 2026 rule.

Section 1

game

What a player needs

Key points in this section

Pickleball combines elements badminton, table tennis, and tennis. It is played with a perforated plastic ball and racket on a 20 × 44 ft courtyard with a tennis-style net. Each side has right and left feed courtyard and a kitchen — the no-volley zone (‘kitchen’). The game can be played as singles or pair-game.

‘in’ standard game, the feed is directed diagonally into the opposite feed courtyard. The sides then return the ball over the net until one side commits a violation and loses the rally.

With traditional scoring system, only the serving side scores glasses. After winning a rally, the change feedrs feed courtyard and continues serving. A game is usually played 11 glasses and must be won by at least two glasses.

The 2026 rule also allow rally scoring system — a point for every rally — a point for every rally as a separately pre-permitted option: the winner each rally scores a point. mini-singles is a singles variation played on half the courtyard. Both formats are described ‘in’ detail ‘in’ section 14.

The game is grounded ‘in’ cooperation, courtesy, and fair treatment disputed situations. When there is reasonable doubt, the benefit goes the opponent rather than yourself.

section 1 establishes the foundation the entire game. Pickleball is built around the diagonal feed, the two-bounce requirement at the start a rally, the kitchen — the no-volley zone (‘kitchen’) — and continuous game until a violation or another competition sides the courtyard the rally. These rule work together: even after the mandatory two bounces, a volley is still a violation if the player touches the kitchen or enters it because momentum.

The core principles help allow situations that cannot be decided by taking a singles sentence ‘out’ the rule. It matters when a player raised the disputed dispute, whether there is sufficient mandatory confidence, whether the doubt should be resolved ‘in’ the opponent favor, and whether the rule provide for a replay. ‘in’ pair-game, a decision or action by one partner can affect the entire team.

If a dispute arises, check ‘in’ order:whether both mandatory bounces after the feed were completed; whether the next blow-up was played ‘in’ the air or after a bounce; whether the dispute concerns the kitchen, a line decision, a violation or external interference; whether the player raised the dispute ‘in’ time rather than after game continued; whether there is a special rule for adaptive game or rally scoring system — a point for every rally — a point for every rally

Two mandatory bounces after the feed

After the feed, the receiving side must re-serve the ball bounce once before returning it. The serving side must then also re-serve the ball bounce once before its first return. After that, the ball may be played either after a bounce or as a volley, provided the kitchen rule is not violated.

The kitchen restricts volleys

The kitchen extends 7 feet from the net on each side the courtyard. While ‘in’ this zone, a player may not hit the ball as a volley before it bounces. Entering the kitchen by itself is not prohibited: the restriction applies specifically volleys and the movement associated with them.

adaptive game may allow a second bounce

player using sports wheelchairs and player with certain disabilities may be allowed two bounces before returning the ball. The first bounce must be inside the courtyard; the second may occur anywhere on the playing area. Detailed terms are collected ‘in’ section 25.

Every point is treated the same

The rule are applied equally every rally regardless its importance the result. The first point a match requires the same approach as the deciding point.

decision are made immediately

A decision must be made without undue delay. A player may not ‘wait’ see how the rally develops or sides the courtyard and then use a late decision for their own advantage.

An unaddressed situation is resolved jointly and fairly

If the rulebook does not directly address a situation, the player should try agree on a fair resolution. A referee may be declared if necessary. Depending on the circumstances, the rally result may stand or, ‘in’ an exceptional case, the rally may be replayed.

Section 2

definitions

What a player needs

Key points in this section

Precise word meanings matter ‘in’ the rule. If the everyday meaning a term differs from the definition below, use the rulebook definition when analyzing a game situation.

section 2 establishes the exact meanings terms used throughout the rulebook. A dispute therefore cannot be resolved only by the everyday meaning a word. for example, “live ball” and “ball ‘in’ game” are not the same: the live-ball state begins when the score decision starts, while the ball is considered ‘in’ game only after the feed is actually struck. This affects which violations and stoppages are possible at a given moment.

It is especially important distinguish closely related concepts: ending the current match early versus tournament withdrawal from future match; replacement from the competition versus a requirement leave the tournament tournament venue; the courtyard versus the broader playing area; a temporary external interference versus a permanent tournament venue; and the first, second, and starting feedr. Before analyzing a disputed rule, first clarify the key term, then read the rule itself and its exceptions.

If a dispute arises, check ‘in’ order:which term from section 2 best describes the episode; when the relevant ball or rally state began and ended; whether the object is permanent or a temporary external obstruction; whether the decision applies the current match or future tournament match; whether section 25 contains a special rule for the sports wheelchair, the player body or an assistive device

Section 3

courtyard and stock

What a player needs

Key points in this section

USA Pickleball stock requirements.

If a dispute arises, check ‘in’ order:whether the courtyard itself or the entire playing area around it is measured; which zone the disputed line belongs; whether the net meets the mandatory height at the center and sidelines; whether the specific ball and paddle are permitted for referee competition; whether a paddle change exceeds the limits permitted by the rule

3.Acourtyard requirements

Стандартная геометрия корта определяется правилами 3.A.1–3.A.4.g.

3.A.1Playing-courtyard dimensions

The courtyard is the same for singles and pair-game: a rectangle 20 feet (6.10 m) wide and 44 feet (13.41 m) long. Pickleball does not use a separate narrower singles courtyard.

3.A.2How measure a courtyard

3.A.3Minimum and recommended playing area

Для a courtyard with increased free space around it рекомендовано 50 × 80 футов (15,24 × 24,38 м), чтобы обеспечить больше свободного пространства вокруг корта.

3.A.4Lines and zones

The basic courtyard lines and zones are defined ‘in’ 3.A.4.a–3.A.4.g: baseline, sideline, kitchen, centerline, marking requirements, feed courtyard and feed zones.

3.A.4.abaseline

Two lines parallel the net that bound the courtyard at both sides the courtyard.

3.A.4.bsidelines

Two longitudinal courtyard boundaries perpendicular the net and baselines.

3.A.4.cno-volley zone (‘kitchen’)

3.A.4.eLine width and color

Lines should be about 2 inches (5.08 cm) wide, use one color and contrast clearly with the playing area so the boundaries are easy see.

3.A.4.ffeed courtyard

3.A.4.gfeed zones — feedr zones

3.Bnet requirements

3.B.1net material

Any mesh material is permitted if the openings do not allow the game ball pass through the netting.

3.B.2net net post

3.B.3paddle hitting surface size

3.B.4Top band

The top the net should preferably be covered with a white tape 2 inches (5,08 cm) wide, enclosing the cord or cable. The edging should rest on that cord/cable and form a stable top edge.

3.B.5center wrist wrist strap

A wrist wrist strap may be used at the center the net set the mandatory center height. It is positioned at courtyard center—10 feet from the outside edge the sidelines.

3.B.6net height at the sideline

Where the net intersects the outside edge the sideline, the top the net must be 36 inches high with a tolerance ±0,25 inch: 91,44 ±0,635 cm above the playing area.

3.B.7net height at center

At the center the courtyard, the top the net must be 34 inches high with a tolerance ±0,25 inch: 86,36 ±0,635 cm. If a center wrist wrist strap is installed, the height is measured with the wrist wrist strap ‘in’ place.

3.Cball requirements

referee game uses ball that comply with subsections 3.C.1–3.C.5 and the current USA Pickleball permitted ball list. Detailed testing procedure and standards are set ‘out’ ‘in’ the USA Pickleball stock requirements.

3.C.1Use permitted ball

3.C.2Model design and permission

3.C.3ball color

3.C.5ball material and surface

На практике мячи с более крупными отверстиями часто используют в зале, а с более мелкими — на улице, но официальный критерий допуска определяется list permitted stock, а не бытовым названием for for indoor game or for outdoor game use.

3.Dpaddle requirements

3.D.1Brand and model

3.D.2paddle dimensions

3.D.3paddle weight

The rulebook does not set a maximum or minimum paddle weight as long as all other construction and change requirements are met.

3.D.4paddle material

USA Pickleball stock requirements.

3.D.5Prohibited features the hitting surface

3.D.5.aHoles and surface damage

Holes, cracks, delamination or dents that compromise the integrity the racket outer shell or hitting surface are not allowed.

3.D.5.cSandpaper effect

The surface must not have sandpaper-like characteristics that create additional handle on the ball.

3.D.5.dRubber

natural or synthetic rubber is prohibited as an added material on the hitting surface.

3.D.5.eMoving parts

Moving parts capable increasing paddle-head momentum and thereby providing a mechanical advantage on a blow-up are not permitted.

3.D.5.fSurfaces that increase rotation

3.D.5.gOther means excessive rotation

3.D.6Permitted paddle changes

3.D.6.bWeight tape

weight tape may be added if its placement complies with 3.D.7 and does not create another prohibited change.

3.D.6.fdesignation stickers

3.D.6.gChanging handle size

handle size may be changed with inserts as long as this does not create a prohibited mechanical element and all other requirements are met.

3.D.6.iHandwritten notes

3.D.7Limits for placement stickers and tape

part II. General rule game

Section 4

scoring system

What a player needs

Key points in this section

Раздел 4 описывает базовый scoring system with side ‘out’. Специальный вариант rally scoring system — a point for every rally — a point for every rally вынесен в раздел 14.A и меняет сам принцип начисления очков и порядок подачи.

If a dispute arises, check ‘in’ order:which scoring system system is used — standard or rally scoring system — a point for every rally — a point for every rally; who feedd at the start the rally; whether winning a rally awards a point or only changes the right feed; what score the specific game is played; whether a two-point advantage is mandatory or a special competition format applies

4.Astandard point awarding

4.Bwinning a game

Section 5

player positions and serving sequence

What a player needs

Key points in this section

If a dispute arises, check ‘in’ order:what the serving side’s score is and who its starting feedr is; who should feed and receive now; which side these player should be on at the current score; when the error was noticed — before the feed, during the rally or afterward; who stopped game and whether the reason for the stoppage was confirmed

5.Asingles: position based on the score

‘in’ singles, the correct positions the feedr and receiver are determined by the feedr current score. Whether the score is even or odd determines the right or left feed area and the corresponding diagonal receiving courtyard.

5.A.1feedr position ‘in’ singles

5.A.2Retaining feed ‘in’ singles

5.Bpair-game serving sequence

‘in’ standard pair-game, both player on a team get the opportunity feed before a side ‘out’. The exception is the very first team feed order each game: the starting team begins ‘in’ the second-feedr state, so only the designated starting feedr feeds before the first side ‘out’.

5.B.1right-hander and receiver

Для rally scoring system — a point for every rally — a point for every rally схема изменяется разделом 14.A.

5.B.2Who becomes the first feedr and second feedr

5.B.3Correct pair positions

5.B.4positions during a rally

Исключения связаны с разрешёнными ситуациями пересечения plane the net the net по правилу 13.I.

5.B.5first-feedr sequence

5.B.6second-feedr sequence

5.CQuestions about the feedr, receiver and positions

Procedure

Before striking the feed, any player may ask the opponent who the right-hander or receiver is, or whether the player are correctly positioned. The opponent must provide the information. This mechanism allows positioning be corrected before the rally without penalty.

5.C.1Calling a positional error during the rally

Procedure

5.C.1.areplay when the review request is justified

Replay

If, at the time the score decision, the right-hander or right-handed was genuinely ‘out’ position and a player stopped the rally promptly with a correct designation the error, the rally does not countdown and must be replayed after the positions are corrected.

5.C.1.bviolation for an incorrect claim

Fault

If a player stops a rally but the claimed feedr/receiver/positioning error did not exist, the player who stopped game receives the violation. A positioning review request cannot be used as a free way side an unfavorable rally.

5.C.1.cThe wrong player received the feed

Fault

If the right-hander and receiver were ‘in’ their proper positions at the time the score decision, but the feed was actually returned by someone other than the designated receiver, it is a violation on the receiving team. The decision may be made even after the rally sides the courtyard, but it must be made before the next feed.

5.C.2A positional error is discovered after the rally has ended

If the right-hander or receiver was positioned incorrectly when the score was declared, but nobody stopped game and the rally was fully completed, the result that rally stands. positions are corrected before the next feed, but the point or side ‘out’ already played is not retroactively cancelled.

Section 6

player readiness and score calling

What a player needs

Key points in this section

If a dispute arises, check ‘in’ order:whether the score announcement had begun when the ‘not ready’ signal was given; whether the score was announced ‘in’ full before the feed was struck; whether the feedr feedd within 10 seconds; when the player review requestd the score relative the return; whether the announced score was actually incorrect

6.ANot-ready signal

Before the score decision begins, any player may clearly indicate that they are not yet ready for the next rally. Once the score decision has started, the ordinary right signal not-ready no longer applies ‘in’ the same way.

6.A.1Permitted ‘not ready’ signals

6.A.2unjustified signal after the score has started

6.BWhen the score may be declared

6.B.2score decision ‘in’ pair-game

‘in’ standard pair-game, three values are declared: the serving team score, the receiving team score, then the feedr number ‘in’ the current rotation. A game begins at “0–0–2” because the starting feedr is treated as the second feedr ‘in’ the team first rotation.

6.B.2.aThe partner announces the score instead the feedr

If the feedr is physically unable decision the score normally, the partner may do so. After this substitution, the same player must continue the score decision through the side the game unless that player also develops a voice impairment.

6.CFull score decision before the feed

6.C.1violation for an early feed

Fault

If the feedr hits the feed before the score announcement is complete, a feedr violation is declared. The rally does not continue as a normal live rally.

6.D10-second rule

6.D.2replay/resumption play when changing the feed area

Replay

If, after the score decision, the serving team changes feed zones correct its positioning, the feedr must allow all player take their proper positions. The score is then declared again, and the 10-second countdown begins from the new full score decision.

6.EWords that ‘stop’ game

Procedure

6.E.1Question about the correct score before the feed

Procedure

Before striking the feed, a player may ask the opponent for the correct score. The opponent must answer. The request should be made before the feed is actually executed so that it does not become a late stoppage the rally.

6.Freview request a score decision

Procedure

6.F.1replay for a genuinely incorrect score decision

Replay

If the score was declared incorrectly and the rally was stopped within the permitted window — before the return feed was struck and before a dead ball — the rally is replayed. The correct score is declared before the replay.

6.F.3violation for a review request the announced score made too late

Fault

Section 7

Filing

What a player needs

Key points in this section

If a dispute arises, check ‘in’ order:where the feedr feet were at the moment contact; how the ball was released and whether the receiver saw the ball release; whether the feed was hit ‘in’ the air or after a bounce; for a volley feed—whether the paddle movement meets the requirements for the swing arc, paddle-head position and contact height; for a after the bounce feed — whether the ball was released naturally without tossing or pushing; where the first bounce the feed landed and whether the ball touched the kitchen line

7.Afeedr position at contact

At the moment the paddle actually contacts the ball, the feedr must simultaneously satisfy 7.A.1, 7.A.2 and 7.A.3: have support ‘in’ the correct feed area, not touch the courtyard and not touch the surface outside the correct feed area.

7.A.1.aviolation: both feet are airborne

Fault

If both feet the feedr are not simultaneously ‘in’ contact with the playing area at the moment ball contact, the feed is prohibited and a violation is declared against the feedr.

7.A.2.aviolation: foot on the courtyard

Fault

If, when the feed is struck, at least one foot touches the courtyard, including prohibited contact with the baseline under the serving-area rule, it is a violation on the feedr.

7.A.3Both feet within the feed area

7.Bball ball release before the feed

Независимо от volley feed или after the bounce feed выпуск мяча должен соответствовать 7.B.1–7.B.3: правильный способ выпуска, отсутствие искусственно добавленного rotation до удара и видимость выпуска для receiver.

7.B.1ball release only by hand or paddle

7.B.2Prohibition on artificially rotationning the ball on ball release

7.B.2.areplay when rotation was added on ball release

Replay

7.B.3The ball release must be visible the receiver

7.Cvolley feed

7.C.1Clearly up paddle arc

At ball contact, the feedr paddle must be moving ‘in’ a clearly up arc. Merely intending swing from low high is not enough if the actual movement at contact is not clearly up.

7.C.2paddle-head position

At contact, the the highest point the paddle head must clearly be no higher than the the highest point the feedr wrist joint. This criterion is judged at the moment the strike.

7.C.4forehand or backhand

A volley feed may be performed with either a forehand or backhand movement if all other technical requirements are met.

7.Dafter the bounce feed

При after the bounce feed feedr отпускает мяч, ждёт его отскока от playing area и ударяет после отскока.

7.D.1natural ball release height

7.D.2No added momentum during ball release

Before contact on the feed, the feedr may not throw, directs or otherwise intentionally accelerate the ball. It must be released, not launched up, downward or sideways.

7.D.3The number bounces is not limited

after a permitted ball release the ball

7.D.4bounce location is not restricted

Before the actual after the bounce-feed contact, the ball may bounce anywhere on the playing area; it does not have bounce only inside the feed area. The feedr foot requirements ‘in’ 7.A still apply at the moment contact.

7.D.5forehand or backhand

after the bounce feed разрешено бить with forehand or backhand.

7.D.6violation for an prohibited after the bounce feed

Fault

Если feedr нарушает 7.D.1 и выпускает мяч не с естественной высоты либо нарушает 7.D.2 и придаёт мячу направленный импульс when releasing the ball, фиксируется violation подающего.

7.EWhere the feed must land

7.E.2violation: feed into the kitchen

Fault

7.E.5violation: the feed hits the receiver or partner before bouncing

Fault

If the feedd ball touches the receiver, the receiver partner, or an item or clothing on them before bouncing, the receiving side is at violation. This differs from an ordinary ‘out’ ball: a player cannot simply re-serve a feed hit them before the bounce without consequence.

Section 8

Line decision

What a player needs

Key points in this section

The core principle section 8 is that the opponent receives the benefit the doubt. A player should decision “‘out’” only when certain and when the decision is made promptly; without a confident decision, the ball is “‘in’.”

filing deadline the decision also matters. If game continues after a disputed bounce, “‘out’” must be declared before the opponent next blow-up or another competition that sides the courtyard the rally. Words a partner before the bounce, such as “leave it,” are not an referee Line decision. spectators do not participate ‘in’ the decision. You may ask the opponent for an opinion, after which separate rule determine whose decision is final.

If a dispute arises, check ‘in’ order:which line relates the disputed landing the ball; whether the player saw a gap between the ball and the line; when the ‘‘out’’ decision was made relative the bounce and the next blow-up; whether it was a line decision or only guidance a partner before the bounce; whether partner disagree ‘in’ their decision

8.AWho is responsible for Line decision

8.BWhen a ball is considered ‘in’

feed is considered ‘in’,

8.CWhen a ball is ‘out’

feed ‘out’, если не попадает в требуемый диагональный feed courtyard; отдельно подчёркивается, что feed на линии kitchen является ‘out’/короткой подачей.

8.DLine-decision ethics

Если мяч невозможно быстро и уверенно назвать ‘out’, он is considered ‘in’.

8.EConfidence mandatory for an ‘‘out’’ decision

8.FHow make an ‘‘out’’ decision

8.F.1What counts as a line decision

8.F.3Deadline for an ‘‘out’’ decision

If a player returns the ball after a disputed bounce, the ‘‘out’’ decision must be made before the opponent next blow-up or another competition that stopped the rally; otherwise the rally continues. If the player did not return the ball, a promptly made ‘‘out’’ decision is recognized even if the ball had already become dead by the time the words were spoken because the miss or sequence, provided the decision was genuinely timely.

8.F.4partner contact before the bounce is not a line decision

8.GA player may change a decision ‘in’ the opponent favor

8.Hpartner disagreement

If partner on the same team disagree — one decision the ball ‘out’ while the other decision it ‘in’ or is unsure — there is a conflict and the team final decision must be ‘in’.

8.IDeferring the decision the opponent

Procedure

8.Jspectators do not participate ‘in’ Line decision

Section 9

dead ball, violations, and external interference

What a player needs

Key points in this section

An external hindrance is a temporary outside competition that prevents the rally from continuing normally. It is not the same as a permanent tournament venue and does not cover ordinary playing difficulties. If the hindrance is justified, the rally is replayed. A player cannot independently decision every alleged violation on an opponent; the rule specify which decisions the sides may make without a referee.

If a dispute arises, check ‘in’ order:what exactly stopped the rally and made the ball dead; whether the player had the right ‘stop’ game independently; what violation was declared and who is authorized decision it; whether the competition is a temporary external obstruction or a permanent tournament venue; whether the rule provide for a replay when the sides disagree

9.AAny stoppage makes the ball dead

9.A.1violation for an unjustified rally stoppage

Fault

If a player stops a rally before the ball becomes dead for another reason, it is a violation against the player who stopped game. Exceptions are a justified external hindrance decision under 9.C, correct designation a feedr/receiver/positioning error under 5.C.1.a, or a timely request correct a genuinely incorrect score decision before the return feed under 6.F.1.

9.BA violation sides the courtyard the rally

9.B.1When a violation can occur

Обычный violation существует только пока the ball remains live.

9.B.2player must decision their own violations

9.B.3Which violations can be declared on the opponent

‘in’ standard without-with the referee game, player may directly decision only two types opponent violations: a no-volley zone (‘kitchen’) violation and a feed foot violations. Other alleged opponent violations are governed by 9.B.4.

9.B.3.aDeadline for calling a violation

9.B.3.bteam disagree on a violation

Replay

If the team disagree about whether a declared kitchen/feed foot violations occurred and the dispute cannot be resolved by mutual mandatory confidence, the current rally is replayed. This is a special rule for team disagreement over a permitted violation decision.

9.B.3.cpartner disagree on a violation

If two partner on the same team disagree about a violation on their own side, the doubt is resolved ‘in’ favor the opponents. A team cannot cancel an unfavorable self-decision through internal disagreement.

9.B.4Other alleged opponent violations

Procedure

If a player believes an opponent committed another violation unrelated the kitchen or a feed foot violations, the player may identify the specific alleged violation after the rally but has no authority assign it unilaterally. ‘in’ standard game, the final decision remains with the player against whom the violation is alleged; ‘in’ tournament game, referee authority applies.

9.CA hindrance makes the ball dead

9.C.1Who may decision a hindrance

9.C.2replay after a hindrance

Replay

When a external hindrance is caused by interference covered by the rule, the rally is replayed and the result the stopped rally is not retained.

Section 10

Situations during a rally

What a player needs

Key points in this section

If a dispute arises, check ‘in’ order:whether the two mandatory bounces were completed; how many times the ball bounced on the player side before the return; whether the ball touched a player, clothing, paddle or permanent tournament venue; whether the double contact occurred ‘in’ one continuous blow-up or ‘in’ two separate actions; whether the ball was actually broken or cracked, or merely became softer and worn; whether the injury or stock problem arose during a live rally or only afterward

10.ATwo mandatory rebounds

10.BThe normal maximum is one bounce

10.B.1violation: double bounce

Fault

If a player does not return the ball before its second bounce on that player side and no special adaptive exception applies, it is a violation against that player or team.

10.Cmandatory result the return

10.C.3violation: ball hits a player

Fault

10.C.5violation: permanent tournament venue after a permitted bounce

Fault

If the ball first bounces legally on a player side and then touches a permanent tournament venue before that player returns it, the side that failed make the return is at violation. A permitted first bounce does not save the rally if the ball then reaches a permanent tournament venue before the return blow-up.

10.DPermitted double hit ‘in’ one continuous movement

10.D.1violation: two separate contacts

Fault

If one player contacts the ball more than once and the action is not a continuous singles-direction blow-up, it is a violation. for example, a player may not first ‘stop’ or pop the ball up and then send it over the net with a separate second movement.

10.D.2violation: both partner hit the ball

Fault

If both partner on a team actually strike the ball while attempting a return, it is a violation. The permitted double-hit rule applies one player and one continuous blow-up, not a sequence contacts by two player.

10.Fdistracting the opponent prohibition

10.GA damaged, too too soft or worn ball

If during a rally the ball is found be broken, cracked, too too soft or noticeably worn, game is not stopped automatically: the rally is completed. The ball is replaced afterward if all player agree that replacement is necessary.

10.G.1replay due a broken or cracked ball

Replay

If all player agree both that the ball is broken or cracked and that the damage affected the outcome the rally, the rally is replayed. If there is no unanimous agreement that the damage affected the result, the played result stands.

10.Hinjury during a rally

If a player is injured during an active rally, the injury itself does not automatically ‘stop’ the ball. The rally continues its natural conclusion, after which medical timeout rule or other available procedure apply.

10.IClothing or stock problem during a rally

10.JThe player item fell on their side

If an item worn or carried by a player falls onto that player half the courtyard, the ball remains live and may even touch the item. A separate exception applies when the item touches the kitchen as part the act executing a volley, ‘in’ which case an kitchen violation under 11.A.1 may occur.

10.KQuick actions between rallies

Section 11

without-volley-zone violations

What a player needs

Key points in this section

If a dispute arises, check ‘in’ order:whether the blow-up was a volley or the ball had already bounced; whether the player, partner or an item connected them touched the kitchen or its line; whether the player momentum continued after the blow-up; whether the player fully exited the kitchen with both feet before a new volley; whether the special adaptive-game rule from section 25 applies

11.AA volley starts outside the kitchen

11.A.1Touching the kitchen during a volley

Fault

If a player touches the kitchen or its line while volleying, a fault is called. The same rule applies if the kitchen is touched by an object or partner with whom the player is physically in contact at that moment.

11.A.2violation: momentum carries the player into the kitchen

Fault

11.A.3violation: player did not leave the kitchen before the volley

Fault

If a player was previously ‘in’ the kitchen, the player is not considered have re-established a permitted position for a volley until both feet have contacted the playing area completely outside the zone. A player may not jump from the kitchen and strike the ball ‘in’ the air before both feet land outside; doing so is a violation.

Section 12

paddle during game

What a player needs

Key points in this section

If a dispute arises, check ‘in’ order:how many racket a player uses or carries during a rally; whether the player held the paddle at the moment ball contact; whether the ball rebounded from the paddle or was caught and carried; whether the dispute concerns permission a specific paddle model under sections 3 and 18 rather than its use during a rally

12.AOnly one paddle ‘in’ a rally

12.BThe player must possess the paddle at contact

At the moment the strike, the paddle must be ‘in’ the player possession. It may be held ‘in’ one or two hands and transferred from hand hand at any time, but a player may not throw the paddle and treat a subsequent contact by the flying paddle as a permitted hit.

12.Ccatch the ball/hold and carry the ball prohibition

Section 13

net and net support system during game

What a player needs

Key points in this section

Отдельно регулируется пересечение вертикальной plane the net the net игроком.

If a dispute arises, check ‘in’ order:whether the ball touched the net fabric or any part its supports; whether the disputed contact occurred before or after crossing the plane the net the net; whether the player touched the net, net post or support while the ball was live; whether the player crossed the plane the net the net before a permitted blow-up or only followed through afterward; whether the ball passed around the net post, under the net or through the gap between the net and net post

13.AOrdinary contact with the net fabric

If the ball touches the net fabric or the upper cord/cable between the posts and remains capable continuing a permitted trajectory, it stays live. This includes the feed: net contact by itself does not create an automatic re-serve/replay.

13.A.1replay due without-standard contact with the net fabric

Replay

If a returned ball that is already crossing the net becomes lodged ‘in’ it, strikes a portion net lying on the ground, or interacts with a displaced or deformed net before or after the bounce, the rally is replayed. This is a defective-net condition, not an ordinary net-cord contact.

13.Bball contact with the net net support system

13.B.1violation: the ball touches the net support system before crossing the net

Fault

13.Caround the net net post blow-up is allowed

13.F.1violation: hit before the ball completely crosses

Fault

If a player touches the ball before it has completely crossed the plane the net the net onto that player side, that player is at violation. The only exception is the special back-over-the-net sequence after a bounce under 13.I.2.

13.IGeneral prohibition on crossing the plane the net the net

Пока ball live, игрок и всё, что он носит/переносит, не должны пересекать plane the net the net, кроме двух узких ситуаций, прямо разрешённых 13.I.1 и 13.I.2.

13.I.1Crossing the plane the net immediately after a permitted blow-up

После того как игрок законно ударил мяч на своей стороне, его movement after the blow-up может сразу пересечь plane the net the net.

13.I.2The ball returned over the net by itself after the bounce

13.I.2.bviolation: failed game a returning ball

Fault

Section 14

Variations standard pickleball

What a player needs

Key points in this section

Раздел 14 не создаёт отдельный вид спорта, а модифицирует конкретные пункты стандартных правил. rally scoring system — a point for every rally — a point for every rally в редакции 2026 указан как preliminary option the rule; mini-singles использует стандартный корт, но только одну его продольную половину для каждого rally.

If a dispute arises, check ‘in’ order:which special format was selected before game begins begins; under rally scoring system — a point for every rally — a point for every rally — who gets the point and who feeds next; whether one feedr is used for the team team feed order ‘in’ pair-game; ‘in’ mini-singles — which half the courtyard is active for each player; whether the ball landed ‘in’ the active half the opponent side

14.APreliminary option: rally scoring system — a point for every rally — a point for every rally

rally scoring system — a point for every rally — a point for every rally разрешён как вариант для singles and pair-game.

14.A.1All other standard rule remain ‘in’ effect

Unless section 14.A expressly modifies a particular rule, the ordinary singles or pair-game rule continue apply. rally scoring system — a point for every rally — a point for every rally cannot be treated as a complete repeal the standard requirements for positions, feed, kitchen and violations.

14.A.2A point after every rally

‘in’ rally scoring system — a point for every rally — a point for every rally, the winner each rally receives one point regardless whether they feedd or received. rule 14.A.2 therefore replaces the basic principle ‘in’ 4.A, where only the serving side scores.

14.A.3Two-number score decision

‘in’ rally scoring system — a point for every rally — a point for every rally, the score is declared with two numbers: first the feedr/serving team glasses, then the receiver/receiving team glasses. ‘in’ pair-game, a third feedr-number value is not used because 14.A.5 leaves only one feedr ‘in’ the team feed order.

14.A.4feed ‘in’ pair-game after a side ‘out’

14.A.5One feedr per team team feed order

‘in’ pair-game rally scoring system — a point for every rally — a point for every rally, only one player on the team feeds before a side ‘out’. As soon as the serving team loses a rally, side ‘out’ occurs immediately and the feed passes the opponents; there is no transfer within the team a second feedr.

14.Bmini-singles

14.B.1A standard courtyard is used

14.B.1.a‘in’ each rally, only the right or left half is active

14.B.1.bBoundaries the active half

The active mini-singles half is bounded by the baseline, the corresponding sideline and the centerline. The opposite longitudinal half the courtyard is ‘out’ regardless whether the ball would have been ‘in’ during regular singles.

14.B.1.cExtension the centerline through the kitchen

mini-singles requires an additional line extending the centerline through each kitchen the net. Its color may differ from the other lines; it clearly separates the active right and left halves within the kitchen area.

14.B.2positions are determined by each player individual score

14.B.3All shots must land ‘in’ the opponent active half

Key points in this section

‘in’ an with the referee match, responsibility for Line decision depends on whether line judges have been assigned. player retain the right give the doubt is resolved ‘in’ the opponent favor the opponent, but may not arbitrarily overturn judge’ decisions ‘in’ their own favor.

If a dispute arises, check ‘in’ order:whether there are line judges and which line each one is responsible for; whether the disputed blow-up ended the rally; whether the appeal the referee was submitted before the next feed or before the match result was closed; who made the initial decision — the player or line judges; whether the officiating crew can confidently determine where the ball landed

19.Bmatch without line judges

If there is a referee but no line judges, the player themselves make ‘out’ decision on their side for the baseline, sidelines and centerline the feed courtyard. The referee becomes involved on appeal the referee and through their own duties, but does not automatically take all responsibility for line decisions away from the player.

19.Cmatch with line judges

19.GThe referee cannot make a specific decision

If, on appeal the referee, the referee did not see the incident clearly enough for a clear decision, the outcome is determined by the special sequence ‘in’ 19.G.1–19.G.4 depending on the presence line judges and the available decision from other participants.

19.G.1No decision referee and no line judges

Если line judges в любой момент показывает ‘did not see’ signal, referee немедленно делает decision, если сам ясно видел место отскока. Если the blow-up that ended the rally referee не видел достаточно хорошо, он опрашивает других подходящих членов officiating crew для помощи в решении.

19.IA player may change the decision only ‘in’ the opponent favor

Это продолжение принципа doubt is resolved ‘in’ the opponent favor и спортивной честности.

19.I.2change the decision referee ‘in’ decision

Section 22

Unsportsmanlike conduct and related penalties

Important at a tournament

Key points in this section

section 22 строит лестницу дисциплинарных последствий: verbal warning, technical warning, technical fault, awarding the game the opponent, awarding the match the opponent, а затем removal from the match/expulsion from the tournament.

If a dispute arises, check ‘in’ order:how serious the conduct is and whether it poses a threat others; which warnings and faults have already been received ‘in’ the current match; whether the sanction affects only the disciplinary result or also the score, game or match; who is authorized assign the specific sanction — the referee or tournament director; whether the decision means tournament withdrawal from the competition or an obligation leave the tournament venue

part IV. adaptive-game rule

Section 25

sports wheelchair game, standing adaptive game, and hybrid pair-game game game game

Adaptive play

Key points in this section

25.A.7.aViolation when moving one foot

Fault

25.A.8sports wheelchair position during the feed

At the feed, both large rear wheels must contact the playing area behind the baseline and be within the correct feed area. The small front wheels may extend into the courtyard; the restriction applies specifically the large rear wheels.

25.A.9Two bounces are allowed

25.A.10sports wheelchair and the kitchen

25.A.12.bDoubt about wheel position on the feed

Replay

If the referee is unsure whether both mandatory wheels were correctly positioned relative the feed area at the moment the feed, the referee may order a replay instead calling a violation. This is a special change rule 20.E.2.d.

25.Badaptive standing game game

25.B.1Who belongs the standing adaptive category

25.B.1.aConfirmation category admission

25.B.2assistive device

25.B.2.bThe ball may not be played with an assistive device

25.B.2.emomentum an assistive device after a volley

Fault

If, after a volley, momentum causes an assistive device contact an object or partner that is touching the kitchen, the violation still applies even after the ball has become dead. This is a special change rule 11.A.2.

25.B.3.dpermanent tournament venue before the second bounce

25.C.2Hybrid pair ‘in’ the tournament tournament draw

How use the app

If a situation is governed by a main rule and several subsections, read them together. An exception, claim deadline or replay procedure is often stated specifically ‘in’ a subsection.

Appendix B. How USA Pickleball approaches rule changes

Why common principles are needed

What matters more when rule change

  • 1. Prefeed the character pickleball: enjoyment game, fair competition, cooperation, respectful conduct and the sport’s recognizable features.
  • 2. Make the game easier for player understand: reduce disputes, simplify learning and rule application, while preserving room for technique and stock develop.
  • 3. Make the rule enforceable for judge: the wording should support clear decisions and avoid unnecessary conflicts on courtyard.

Principles rule development

  • 1. Wherever possible, one rule should work ‘in’ regular game and ‘in’ amateur and professional tournaments, with or without a referee. Separate exceptions should be genuinely necessary.
  • 2. If a specific competition occurs, the rule should clearly state what happens next: game continues, a replay, a violation, a warning or another sanction.
  • 3. rule primarily describe what is prohibited or requires a special procedure. There is no need list every permitted action—that would make the rulebook unwieldy.
  • 4. Wording should leave as little ambiguity as possible. Important terms should be defined ‘in’ the rule itself or ‘in’ the definitions section.
  • 5. stock development is acceptable as long as it does not create an excessive advantage or change the game faster than most player can adapt it.
  • 6. Do not change a rule without a strong reason. Constant unnecessary changes make the game more complicated and reduce trust ‘in’ the rulebook.
  • 7. New playing solutions are acceptable if they do not undermine balance or the core characteristics pickleball.
  • 8. Pickleball’s defining rule should be prefeedd—above all the kitchen and the two-bounce rule—and no singles blow-up, paddle or playing style should completely determine the result.
  • 9. A change should solve a real problem or proactively address an obvious trend that would otherwise lead recurring disputes.
  • 10. Proposed new rule should be discussed with player, judge and other community participants ‘in’ different countries.

courtyard dimensions and explanations for the illustrations

Точные границы зон — 3.A.4.a–g.
  • Таблица к 3.A.3.
  • net height ‘in’ illustrations 3-1: 36 inches ± 0,25 inch at the sidelines and 34 inches ± 0,25 inch at the center. Details—3.B.6–3.B.7.

Dispute on court

Reconstruct the episode first, then open the rule

Record five things: who served, what score was called, where the ball landed, whether it bounced, and where the player was at the moment of the action. Then find the relevant rule and read it together with its subparagraphs. The exception or procedure is often stated below the main rule.

For ordinary play, the most relevant sections are usually scoring, serving, lines, the kitchen, the net, violations and external interference. For tournaments, also check the rules on officiating, time-outs, sanctions and match termination.

Frequently asked questions about the reference guide

How does traditional scoring differ from rally scoring?

With traditional scoring, only the serving side can score a point. If the receiving side wins the rally, it does not gain a point: the server changes or the serve passes to the opponents. With rally scoring, the winner of every rally scores a point regardless of who served.

Does touching the net on a serve mean a replay?

No. If the ball touches the net, crosses to the opponent's side, and lands legally in the correct service court, play continues. Net contact by itself does not create a replay.

Can I go into the kitchen

Yes. You may enter the kitchen. You may not volley while touching the kitchen or its line, and you may not enter the kitchen because of your momentum after such a volley. After the ball bounces, you may play it from inside the kitchen.

Why is the first score in doubles 0–0–2?

At the start of the game, the team serving first has only one server before the serve passes to the opponents. That is why the opening server is treated as server two and the first score is called 0–0–2.

How to quickly find the rule you need?

Enter a plain-language description of the situation or a rule number in the search on this page. You can also choose a topic or open the official table of contents. Numbering is preserved, so the relevant provision can easily be checked against the English original.
