Why protective tape is needed on a paddle

Protective tape takes impacts that would otherwise hit the paddle edge, its most vulnerable area. The edge is the first part to touch the court on low shots, clip the net and posts, or collide with another paddle at the net. Without tape, the edge gradually chips and a crack can eventually reach the playing surface.

The second reason is cost. A pickleball paddle is much more expensive than a roll of protective tape, and the manufacturer's warranty almost never covers mechanical chips caused by hitting the court surface. Tape is a consumable costing a few hundred rubles that can postpone the purchase of a new paddle by a season or two.

What the tape protects against: chips and cracks

Without protection, each such contact leaves a tiny chip. Individually they are barely noticeable, but after several months of active play they can combine into a visible crack along the edge. If the crack reaches the core, moisture can enter, the honeycomb can swell and the paddle can lose rebound—this is no longer cosmetic but a performance defect. Edge tape does not make the rim invulnerable, but it absorbs most of these micro-impacts and shifts wear from the paddle to the tape.

Types of protective tape for a paddle

There are two fundamentally different types of tape for a pickleball paddle: tape applied to the edge (edge tape / protective tape) and tape wrapped around the handle (overgrip). They are sometimes confused because of similar naming, but they serve different purposes.

Edge-protection tape is a narrow strip, usually 10–13 mm wide, that runs around the paddle perimeter. It absorbs impacts against the court and net. Some products are also sold as paddle weight-tuning tape: a heavier version that protects the edge while shifting balance toward the rim and increasing swing inertia.

How to apply protective tape: step-by-step

Наклеить защитную ленту на ракетку можно самостоятельно за 10–15 минут без специальных инструментов — понадобятся только сама лента, ножницы и сухая тряпка для обезжиривания кромки.

1. Wipe the paddle edge with a dry cloth and, if necessary, a mild alcohol solution to remove dust and grease: adhesive does not hold well on a dirty surface. 2. Find a convenient starting point on the edge—usually the lower part of the rim near the throat, where the seam is least noticeable. 3. Peel the backing from the first 5–7 cm of tape and attach the start, stretching the strip slightly so it lies without bubbles. 4. Work around the paddle in short 5–10 cm sections, removing the backing gradually and pressing the tape onto the edge with your fingers. 5. On curved sections (the tip and heel of the paddle), stretch the tape slightly more so it follows the edge without folds. 6. When you reach the starting point, cut the tape with a small 1–2 cm overlap and press the joint firmly. 7. Run a finger or the soft edge of a card along the full tape length to push out any remaining air bubbles.

If the tape lifts or buckles in one area after application, it is better to reapply that section immediately rather than leave it as is; over time, the raised edge will be the first part to peel away under impact.

When to replace the tape: signs of wear

Replace the tape when it starts peeling, becomes thin in impact areas, or a crack in the paddle edge is already visible underneath. At that point, delaying replacement is not useful because the tape is no longer doing its job.

Common mistakes when using protective tape

Самая частая ошибка — клеить ленту поверх пыли и жира на кромке: клей не схватывается как следует, и лента начинает отходить уже через одну-две тренировки, а не через сезон.

The second mistake is stretching the tape too tightly along straight sections of the paddle edge. Overstretched tape contracts further over time and lifts at the joins, especially in heat when the adhesive softens.
