Serve: technique and tactics

Dink shot: a soft shot near the net

A dink is a soft short-range shot that sends the ball on a low trajectory over the net directly into the opponent's non-volley zone, or kitchen. It is played without a backswing, using the wrist and forearm with an open paddle face; the goal is to prevent the opponent from attacking the ball from above.

Volley

A volley is a shot taken before the ball touches the ground, usually near the non-volley-zone line with a short blocking motion and no large backswing. The paddle stays in front of the body, contact is made in front, and the wrist remains stable; a volley is closer to a block than a full swing.

The key volley rule in pickleball is that you may volley only while outside the kitchen, and your momentum after the shot must not carry you or your paddle into that zone. Otherwise it is a fault. Keep the body slightly back from the line and transfer weight into the shot rather than forward into the zone.

A volley can be attacking—a firm downward shot when the opponent leaves the ball too high—or defensive, a soft block during a fast exchange at the net. An attacking volley is one of the main ways to finish a rally, which is why the net position in pickleball is considered offensive: the pair that establishes itself at the kitchen line first tends to win more rallies.

Smash: power-shot technique

Groundstroke: forehand and backhand

A groundstroke is played after the ball bounces, usually from the back third of the court as a forehand or backhand. The swing is shorter than in tennis, contact is made around hip height, and the stroke travels upward with topspin to control depth.

The groundstroke is used in the first phase of the rally before the pair reaches the net. A deep, consistent shot off the bounce gives time to reach the kitchen line and move into an attacking position. A hard, low cross-court groundstroke is more difficult for the opponent than a straight shot down the line because the diagonal path is longer and gives less time to prepare the reply.

Lob: technique and tactical use

A lob is a high arcing shot over opponents positioned at the net, landing closer to their baseline. The technique resembles a groundstroke but uses a more open paddle face and a stronger low-to-high path to lift the ball.

A lob is used when opponents are established at the net and do not allow an attacking dink or volley. A high arc forces them to retreat and give up the advantageous position. An unexpected lob during a sequence of dinks can disrupt the tactical rhythm of opponents who have settled comfortably at the net.

Which shot to use when: comparison

Shot selection in pickleball depends on the phase of the rally and the opponent's position at the net, not on which shot you personally execute best. The table shows the intended situation for each of the six basic shots.

  • Shot: Serve · When to use: Start of rally · Trajectory: Low to high, deep · Common mistake: Overswing, ball into the net
  • Shot: Groundstroke · When to use: From the baseline before moving to the net · Trajectory: Rising from the bounce · Common mistake: Flat shot without spin
  • Shot: Dink shot · When to use: Both players at the kitchen line · Trajectory: Low and soft over the net · Common mistake: Ball too high above the net
  • Shot: Volley · When to use: At the net, ball in the air · Trajectory: Short forward block · Common mistake: Stepping into the kitchen after the shot
  • Shot: Smash · When to use: The opponent has lifted the ball high · Trajectory: Steeply downward · Common mistake: Hitting directly at the player instead of into a target zone
  • Shot: Lob · When to use: Opponents are tight to the net · Trajectory: High, over their heads · Common mistake: Insufficient height or depth

Common errors in stroke technique

A common beginner mistake is using the same swing for every shot regardless of the situation. A large swing on a dink sends the ball out or feeds an attack, while an overly soft groundstroke from the baseline falls short and invites pressure.

How to train shots: sequence of actions

Pickleball shot technique is trained by rally phase rather than as isolated shots outside a game situation. A sequence that produces steady progress:

Paddle weight affects how quickly technique is learned: a light paddle (198–220 g) gives more control on dinks and volleys, while a heavier one provides more power on smashes and serves. For group and corporate sessions where several players need to establish basic technique quickly, social pickleball formats work well because shots are developed through game situations rather than isolated drills. Children are usually given a lighter, shorter junior paddle for the same skills, making it easier to establish the correct grip earlier.

  • Stabilize the grip and contact point on the serve—the serve is evaluated by in-court percentage, not speed.
  • Practice the groundstroke after the bounce on both sides—forehand and backhand in separate series until both are equally reliable.
  • Move to a series of dink shots with a partner standing opposite at the net; the exchange is about control rather than winning the point.
  • Add volley practice — train a short block while keeping the feet set near the kitchen line.
  • Work on the smash and lob last. They are finishing shots, and without a solid foundation from the first four areas they are rarely consistent.

Frequent questions

Which pickleball shot should be learned first?

The groundstroke off the bounce and the serve are foundational shots that start and sustain the rally before moving to the net. Without them, practicing the dink and volley has little value.

Why is a dink shot considered harder than a smash?

Do pickleball shots need topspin?

How do you know when it is time to move to the net after a serve or return?

How does a volley differ technically from a dink shot?

A volley is a shot taken before the ball bounces, often as a firm block. A dink shot is always soft and is usually played after the bounce in the kitchen with an open paddle face.
